It took me all afternoon I

Paulina’s birthday party was stupidstupidstupid.

All the other kids had brung toys, but my mum bought hankies. While Paulina was opening my present everyone was guessing what it would be, but after she opened my present nobody said anything.

And I was the only boy there.

She wore a bright knitted jumper. Wool makes me itchy and I don’t like the way the hems curl up.

She’s from Poland and lives with her mum and dad in the flats near the special school. We’ve got a big backyard and an outdoor toilet so we can lock up Zip when we play cricket.

She’s got a poster of Kylie above their little fridge. We’re not even allowed to watch Neighbours.

Inside, everyone was in pink. Outside, the sky was so grey I couldn’t even see the mountain.

Walking back with Mum, I found a tape with all the music fallen out. I worked out that I could use my pointer to wind it up. When we got home I worked out that I could use a pencil.

Just before dinner time, I put it in our stereo and pressed play.

Today was a good day.
